Jeffrey Chau's Official Blog
Blogs, also known as weblogs, are a popular publishing tool for individuals looking to express their thoughts and opinions. But while many people create blogs as a hobby, many are also interested in using blogs as a platform for professional work or work that publishers and webmasters may not be willing to take a chance on. Whether it is a book or periodical, new publications are risky business ventures. Because of this, publishers often look for writers with established readerships. This often makes the industry difficult for new writers to break into, since writers need to get published in some form to build the readership a publisher is looking for.
About The Client
Jeffrey Chau is a Communications major at Simon Fraser University and has published videogame reviews and a handful of articles through the web. With nearly every household in North America owning some kind of videogame console or gaming grade computer, Jeffrey's interest is in studying videogames as a form of mass media.
Initial Goals and Challenge
As a new writer, Jeffrey needed a way to establish some kind of readership base. He needed to find readers that also shared his interests and would keep returning as regular visitors. It was important that his site not get confused with a consumer interest site, where readers go to get game reviews and previews of upcoming games. As well, Jeffrey needed some type of archive so he could maintain a portfolio of his work. He needed all these features and an interface that was easy to use as he did not have the technical knowledge to update and maintain a web site.
Client Thoughts
I wanted to create a gaming site that didn't depend on game publishers handing out press releases and preview demos for content. At the same time, I wanted to avoid falling into New Games Journalism movement, where the writing tends to be pretentious, and more about the author than about videogames. I wanted a website that looks at games from a broader perspective - one that looks at games as a form of mass media.
It's a perspective that is nearly impossible to find in any current gaming magazine or website at the moment. While I was weighing various options to accomplish this, I was not exactly sure on what was the best way to do it.

Solution and Results
After a brief consultation period, it became obvious that a weblog was the ideal choice for Jeff's website. It has the same potential to capture an audience comparable to a traditional website. At the same time, its ease of use and simple maintenance would allow Jeff to run the blog independently, fashioning the site according to his own personal sensibilities. In the end, we developed Jchau.com and helped to establish it as Jeff Chau’s official site for his exclusive research and insights within the gaming industry.
Client Feedback
Getting a blog up and running is an easy thing to do, and there are millions of people writing a world of topics on their blogs. Everything from the mundane to the highly specialized gets posted. I wanted to use my blog as a showcase for my writing and I wanted the focus of the site to be a discussion of videogames as a mass medium. I needed my blog to stand out as well as make a good first impression.
